Our Mission and Philosophy:
The primary focus of the WCSA / CAC programs are to develop character, confidence,
leadership and social interaction in young people through sports and recreational fun and adventure. The WCSA / CAC
believes that performance is secondary to these ideals. As such the programs of the WCSA / CAC are enriching for both
"star" athletes and those young people who have not yet realized the champion inside of them.
The budding "stars" will gain the opportunity to develop leadership, sportsmanship and
teamwork skills while the developing individual will gain these in addition to confidence, ability and a new found sense
of accomplishment that can carry over into other daily pursuits.
We actively encourage young people of all levels of ability to work with us and play with
us. Each participant is recognized as an individual and we actively seek to bring out the best in each one. We
recognize that youths of today have many different physical, social and emotional developmental challenges and
we measure our success on how well the individual has improved as a person not as a "winner" or "loser".
The WCSA / CAC also understands the busy pace of life for today's families. As such
our programs are considered recreational and we do not mandate extensive practices or long hours devoted to sport. Our
youth sports programs are designed to require little to no league mandated practices and games average 1 hour in length.
WCSA / CAC programs mirror the coaching philosophy of their
founder and director Chris Murrell. Voted Bay Area
Coach of the Year in 1997, Coach Murrell uses sports as a way to develop and instill positive lifetime traits of
character, confidence, teamwork, leadership and social interaction. These traits are emphasized far
and above scores and standings of teams. Winning and losing give way to a positive and fun play experience for kids
whose focus is on the enjoyment of the game and the personal improvement of the player.
Coach Murrell measures the success of his programs by the
"lowest common denominator". This measure of success is in how much the players and campers as individuals develop and
that one player or camper in the program who needed the most attention improved and grew as a better person.
"Winning records" are irrelevant to this philosophy.
None of our youth programs keep official scores or standings.
We have found that in the course of a game, kids will keep score themselves but without the emphasis on this aspect of competition,
every child leaves the field after a game feeling like the champion they are. Coach Murrell tells his coaches,
adult staff and parents that when a player asks what the score is, tell them " I wasn't keeping score
but wow, you're doing great out there !"
It is this philosophy that distinguishes the WCSA, and
CAC programs from other youth programs and is why ours are one of the fastest growing and most successful youth sports
and recreational programs in the Bay Area
Currently we offer youth athletic, sports and recreation programs including Ultimate Tackle
Football, NFL flag football, baseball, soccer, basketball, traditional day, sports and high adventure overnight camps for
ages 3-18.
